Pendulum 111

A Trilogy of Progress through Change
Text, illustrations and music by Suug

In nature, no movement is like the other — gentle waves on the sea, swaying branches in the wind. Everything is traversed full of life. It’s the same with Pendulum 111.

Pendulum 111 is a trilogy for strings, electroacoustic music, and percussion.

The core idea of the trilogy is to create a sense of the progress through constant change and adaptation. This takes place through a form of musical interpretation of pendulum movements: back and forth … up and down … in and out … 0 and 1 … plus and minus. This may seem even to you at first, but these pendulum movements are, when listening more closely, constantly subjected to subtle changes, full of fractures and faults.

You might think that the pendulum movements are about simple loops, about repetition. However, it is the opposite; it is more about something cyclic and possibly evolutionary — about the endless process of pioneering, advancing, and changing.

At Pendulum 111, you hear three pieces, all of which have the same mathematical pace, but are subject to a different (pendulum) frequency. Numbers 0 and 1 of the music track titles allude to the change of state of the pendulum movement and to a seemingly inevitable pushing forward in jumps: first 001, then 011, then 111.

Pendulum 111 plays with the expectations of your ears. The pendulum movement of the musical concept deliberately breaks, but subtly and with uniformity. The surging loops produce a feeling of familiarity — one that is constantly changing. The “groove” stays in your head, even long after the music has ended.
